Carbon Molecular Sieve – HK-CMS-330 for High-Performance PSA Nitrogen Generation

Product Overview

Carbon Molecular Sieve (CMS) is a non-polar adsorbent specifically engineered for the separation of nitrogen from air under ambient temperature and pressure swing conditions. HK-CMS-330 is a premium-grade carbon molecular sieve manufactured from high-purity elemental carbon, appearing as black cylindrical pellets with a uniform particle size distribution of 1.0–1.3 mm. The material contains a substantial number of micropores with diameters of approximately 4 angstroms (4Å), which exhibit strong instantaneous affinity for oxygen molecules. This unique pore structure enables CMS to preferentially adsorb oxygen from compressed air, producing a continuous stream of high-purity nitrogen for a wide range of industrial applications.

HK-CMS-330 represents the high-capacity tier of carbon molecular sieves, delivering exceptional nitrogen productivity. At 99.5% nitrogen purity, HK-CMS-330 achieves a production rate of 330 Nm³ per metric ton of CMS per hour, making it the preferred choice for industries requiring high-volume nitrogen production with purities ranging from 97% to 99.999%.

Operating Principle

CMS separates air based on the principle of kinetic selectivity. At equilibrium, the adsorption capacity of CMS for oxygen and nitrogen is relatively similar. However, oxygen molecules diffuse through the narrow micropores much faster than nitrogen molecules. During the short adsorption cycle of a PSA process, oxygen is preferentially adsorbed while nitrogen remains in the gas phase and is collected as the product gas.

The PSA process operates using a continuous two-bed cycle.

Step 1 – Adsorption (Pressurization)

Compressed and purified air flows through the adsorbent bed. Oxygen molecules are selectively adsorbed onto the CMS surface, while nitrogen exits the system as the product gas.

Step 2 – Desorption (Depressurization)

When the adsorbent approaches oxygen saturation, system pressure is reduced. The adsorbed oxygen is released, regenerating the CMS for the next adsorption cycle.

By alternating between two adsorption beds—one adsorbing while the other regenerates—the PSA process provides a continuous supply of nitrogen without external heating, ensuring high energy efficiency and reliable operation.

Core Advantages

Exceptional Nitrogen Productivity

HK-CMS-330 delivers industry-leading nitrogen production across a broad purity range. At 99.5% purity, it produces 330–340 Nm³/h·t, while maintaining 102–105 Nm³/h·t at ultra-high purity levels of 99.999%. The model designation “330” reflects its outstanding nitrogen production capacity at 99.5% purity.

High Purity with Low Impurities

HK-CMS-330 can produce nitrogen with purity levels up to 99.999% using PSA technology. When combined with optional purification equipment, oxygen concentration can be reduced below 5 ppm, with pressure dew points below −60°C, making it suitable for semiconductor and other high-tech industries.

Superior Mechanical Strength

With crush strength of 65–70 N per pellet and hardness of ≥98 wt%, CMS-330 withstands repeated PSA pressure cycles with minimal attrition. Extremely low dust content (≤100 ppm) minimizes contamination and extends adsorbent service life.

Long Service Life

HK-CMS-330 typically provides 6–10 years of reliable operation under normal working conditions while maintaining stable adsorption performance through thousands of adsorption-desorption cycles.

Stable and Consistent Performance

Every production batch undergoes rigorous quality control to ensure uniform particle size, density, and adsorption characteristics. Its excellent stability makes CMS-330 suitable for applications requiring strict nitrogen purity control.

Cost-Effective On-Site Nitrogen Generation

HK-CMS-330 eliminates dependence on compressed gas cylinders and liquid nitrogen deliveries. Compared with cryogenic air separation, PSA technology offers lower energy consumption, reduced capital investment, and greater operational flexibility.

Applications

HK-CMS-330 carbon molecular sieve is widely used in PSA nitrogen generation systems across numerous industries.
